Privacy & GDPR Policy

We respect your privacy. This is plain-English so you know exactly what we do and don't do with your data. Western Horsepower is operated by Western Horsepower Ltd, based in the United Kingdom. We process your personal data in accordance with the UK General Data Protection Regulation (UK GDPR) and the Data Protection Act 2018.

What We Collect

  • Account: email address and a password (stored as an encrypted hash — we never see it).
  • Profile: rider name, skill level, weekly target.
  • Coach Profile (if you register as a coach):
    • Full Name
    • Email Address (Optional)
    • Tel No (Optional)
    • Website (Optional)
    • Bio (Optional)
  • Horse profiles: name, breed, and photo you choose to upload.
  • Ride data: daily challenges, journal entries.
  • Device: anonymous crash reports and basic app usage (what screens you open).

What We Do With It

  • Generate personalized riding challenges using AI, tailored to YOU.
  • Show you your ride journal, streaks, and milestone badges.
  • Send push notifications (only if you opt in) to remind you to ride.
  • Fix bugs and improve the app.
  • Create and manage your account.
  • Provide core App features.
  • Send service communications.
  • Comply with legal obligations.

Data Sharing and Disclosure

  • We do NOT sell your data to anyone.
  • We do NOT use third-party advertising networks.
  • We do NOT read your journal or photos for any purpose other than showing them back to you.
  • We do NOT share your data with other app users.

We may disclose your data only in the following limited circumstances:

  • Legal compliance: Where required by law, court order, or regulatory authority.
  • Business transfers: In the event of a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, your data may be transferred (you will be notified in advance).
  • Protection of rights: Where necessary to protect the rights, property, or safety of Western Horsepower Ltd, our users, or others.

Sub-Processors We Use

To run the App, we pass limited, anonymous data through these trusted services:

  • Anthropic (Claude AI) — generates your daily challenges. We send your skill level, horse name, recent ride titles, and ratings. We do NOT send your identity, email, or journal text.
  • MongoDB Atlas — secure cloud database that stores your account.
  • Apple Push / Google FCM — delivers push notifications (if you enable them).
  • Apple / Google — processes Pro subscription billing. They handle your payment info directly — we never see your card.

How Long Do We Keep Your Data

We retain your personal data only for as long as necessary for the purposes described in this Policy:

  • Account data (name, email, tel no, website): Retained for the duration of your account, plus 2 years after deletion.

When data is no longer needed, we securely delete or anonymise it.

Security

All connections between the App and our servers are encrypted with HTTPS. Passwords are stored as one-way encrypted hashes — they cannot be decrypted, even by us. We follow industry-standard practices, but no system is 100% secure — please use a strong, unique password.

Your Rights

You have the following rights in relation to your personal data:

  • Right to access: Request a copy of the personal data we hold about you.
  • Right to rectification: Ask us to correct inaccurate or incomplete data.
  • Right to erasure: Ask us to delete your personal data ("right to be forgotten").
  • Right to restrict processing: Ask us to limit how we use your data.
  • Right to data portability: Receive your data in a structured, machine-readable format.
  • Right to object: Object to our use of your data where we rely on legitimate interests.
  • Right to withdraw consent: Where processing is based on consent (e.g. location data), you may withdraw it at any time without affecting the lawfulness of prior processing.

Younger Riders

Western Horsepower is designed for riders aged 13 and over. Riders under 16 should use the app with a parent or guardian's knowledge — riding is wonderful but it carries real risk, and a grown-up should be on board with what you're doing.

We do not knowingly create accounts for anyone under 13. If you believe a younger child has signed up, please email support@westernhorsepower.com and we'll take care of it straight away.

International Transfers

Our servers may be located in the United States. By using the App, you consent to your data being processed in the US under its privacy laws.

Changes

We may update this Privacy Policy. Material changes will be announced in-app. Your continued use after updates means you accept the new Policy.

When we make significant changes, we will notify you via the App or by email. The updated policy will be effective from the date stated at the top of this document. We encourage you to review this Policy periodically.

If you are unhappy with how we handle your personal data, you have the right to lodge a complaint with the UK Information Commissioner's Office (ICO):
